About Us

“A more personal approach.”

Alaska Trust Company was founded in 1996 by the financial and estate planning experts that helped create Alaska’s advantageous and liberating trust laws. Since that time, thousands of clients from across the country have entrusted us with over $4 billion in assets. Alaska Trust Company gives you access to the friendliest trust laws in the United States no matter where you live. You do not have to be an Alaskan resident, or even visit the state, to benefit.

But we offer more than access to the best laws in the land. We are your trusted partner and a financial services provider that, unlike the big investment firms, does not push financial products on our clients. As a “smaller, faster, stronger” wealth management company that can nimbly react to change and client preferences, we provide a level of stability and impeccable service that can’t be found in the larger firms. We are not publicly traded and thus not concerned with general public stock holdings – we have no hidden agendas and no conflicts of interest. Our focus is you, your family, and the growth and protection of your wealth.

We want to make money with you, not off you.

WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT

As well as having excellent trustee services, investment and financial planning tools, Alaska Trust Company has several other advantages. As we all know, we are currently experiencing unprecedented economic volatility and turmoil. Working with an institution that you can truly trust to look out for your best interests is essential. The below facts explain why you can trust Alaska Trust Company.

  • Zero Debt - Alaska Trust Company is proud to say that we have never used debt to finance any of our operations. We fund all operations and projects with company equity and cash flow.
  • Profitable - Alaska Trust Company has been a profitable company every year since 1998. Even in the hardest of economic and financial times we remained profitable through 2008. Alaska Trust Company's revenue is derived from ongoing fees rather than speculative market based operations, thus making our revenue exceptionally stable.
  • Compliance - It is important to know you can trust where your assets are administered and managed. We are an Alaska State Chartered Trust Company regulated by the Division of Banking. We have on-going internal controls and dual audit functions (internal auditing by our Compliance Officer as well as independent accountant auditing), and our Trust Accounting software vendor SunGard is a global leader in software and processing solutions for financial services. Additionally, our financial statements are audited yearly by a highly respected firm associated with the RSM-McGladrey Network.
  • No Proprietary Products - Contrary to nearly every large investment firm, Alaska Trust Company has no proprietary products. We do not offer any in-house managed mutual funds. Why does this matter? This assures you that when Alaska Trust Company recommends an investment strategy or product it is done with only your best interests in mind. We do not promote proprietary funds in which we are able to charge additional fees.
  • No Commingled Assets - Finally! A truly safe place to put your money. Unlike common depository banks, Alaska Trust Company does not commingle client funds. We do not combine your assets with ours. When you deposit money or assets into an account at Alaska Trust Company you need not worry about our financial stability. Your assets are held in separate accounts that are unable to be touched by potential creditors of Alaska Trust Company. These accounts are regulated on a periodic basis both by independent auditors and the State of Alaska's Division of Banking.
  • Liability Insurance - Alaska Trust Company has Director and Officers, Fiduciary and Bankers Professional Liability Insurance.
  • Safekeeping of Securities - In the beginning of our relationship many of our clients asked "where will my securities be held." If you open an account with Alaska Trust Company your marketable securities are not "shipped up to Alaska." Alaska Trust Company, as with all other financial institutions, whether it be a firm like JP Morgan or Goldman Sachs, hold your marketable securities at an institution called the "Depository Trust Company" (DTC), which is located in New York City. For more information about DTC please go to their website at www.dtc.org.
  • Transparency - As a result of the many exposed financial scandals investors today are concerned with the transparency of the institution managing their assets and the investments that are being bought in their accounts. These financial scandals were allowed to grow because of the lack of transparency required from these financial institutions. They were not required to fully disclose what investments they held. Here at Alaska Trust Company you will find full transparency. You are sent a statement that explicitly states what investments are held in your account.
  • Privately Owned - You might wonder why this is important to you. Publically held companies must look out for many different shareholders, Alaska Trust Company must only look after a few. This makes is easier for all owners/shareholders to agree with the goals and direction of the company. Also, Alaska Trust Company has no public stock, therefore, we are not pressured to focus on short-term success to bolster the market price. Instead, we are able to focus on the long-term strategies that best serve the company and our clients.

As illustrated by the recent financial fallout, bigger isn't always better; you need customized solutions which fit your goals. Indeed, internationally acclaimed designer Donna Karan recently provided this testimonial with regard to Alaska Trust Company:

"My family has used the Alaska Trust Company for several years. We have found its services to be completely satisfactory, and financially rewarding."

We hope these facts will help instill confidence in you that Alaska Trust Company is safe, stable, and ready to help you through these turbulent times to a calmer future.
